Tornado Damage at the
Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum

About 10 p.m. on February 11, 2009, Waco was hit by a large storm front, part of the system that wreaked havoc in Oklahoma.

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame was in the path of what meteorologists call a microburst or possibly a micro tornado.

Unbelievably, the wind did not damage the large flag in front of the museum or the flag on the horse sculpture by the parking lot.

All employees escaped intact, but the huge old sixty-foot elm tree by the entrance to the building was twisted and destroyed.

Luckily, the elm fell just right and did not damage the museum or either of our outdoor sculptures, although it almost got the George Erath sculpture.

The wind blew all of the fence down around the archaeological site, but it left two work trailers (tornado magnets) untouched.

The new Ranger Headquarters and Education Center in the park were undamaged.

The Parks Department responded immediately. They did a great job in removing most of the debris so the museum could open.

The Texas Rangers are one of the oldest law enforcement organizations on the North American continent.

They originated as "rangering companies" to provide protection against Indians on the western frontier of Texas.

Stephen F. Austin hired the first  ten Texas Rangers in 1823 to protect the settlers in his colony.
They played an important role in the Texas War for Independence from Mexico and evolved into a paramilitary force that primarily fought Indians and patrolled the Mexican border.

During the Civil War, with thousands of Texans off fighting with the Confederate Army,
frontier protection was afforded by a "Regiment of Rangers."
Even it eventually became part of the Confederate Army.
Terry's Texas Rangers became one of the
South's most revered fighting units.
